Three debuts for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars at Auto China 2016

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has captivated the 14th #beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto #china 2016) with three spectacular new motor cars. #blackbadge Ghost received its Asian debut only six weeks after its global unveiling at the 2016 Geneva Salon, whilst Wraith ‘Inspired by Music’ and Dawn enjoyed their Chinese motor show debuts.

Black Badge is the alter ego of Rolls-Royce, darker, more assertive, more confident and powerful, and more demanding. The unveiling of the #blackbadge is a truly transformative moment for the great brand of Rolls-Royce. Rolls-Royce delivered an unparalleled presence at the #auto show by attractively presenting the Wraith ‘Inspired by Music,’ the third model completing a striking and distinctive Bespoke trilogy, and the Dawn, the youngest and most social in history.

On unveiling Ghost #blackbadge, Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars commented. “With #blackbadge we have created the most commanding presence on the super-luxury landscape. #blackbadge is an attitude to life, an aspect of the Rolls-Royce brand that appeals to those people who are elusive and defiant, the risk takers and disruptors who break the rules and laugh in the face of convention. They are driven by a restless spirit. They play hard and they change the world. Technically and aesthetically #blackbadge is the alter ego of Rolls-Royce, darker, more assertive, more confident and powerful, and more demanding. Unveiling it here at #auto #china 2016 is a truly transformative moment for our great brand in #china.”

Leon Li, Director of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, #china, commented, “Every Rolls-Royce is a unique work of art, and this collection of three very different, very beautiful Rolls-Royces will delight our Chinese patrons in different ways. Some will be naturally drawn to the dark edginess of our #blackbadge cars, whilst others will embrace the burst of sunlight that is the #rollsroycedawn, the sexiest, most social of all super-luxury drophead motor cars. And those who appreciate the sound of perfection will of course enjoy Wraith ‘Inspired by Music’.

Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge

Black Badge is an attitude to life, an aspect of the Rolls-Royce brand that appeals to those people who are elusive and defiant, the risk takers and disruptors who break the rules and laugh in the face of convention. When the day is done, and the battle is won, these supremely confident people engage with the night, going where it leads them and taking all it has to offer as their just reward. They follow the road less travelled, living the unconventional life, driven by their relentless spirits to change the world in their own way, much as their celebrated predecessors did in days past.

The substantive transformation of an icon

As a permanent Bespoke series of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, Rolls-Royce #blackbadge delivers an authentic transformation both in appearance and engineering. This darker aesthetic manifests itself in the transformation of the Spirit of Ecstasy, the front grille surround, boot lid finisher, lower air inlet finisher and exhaust pipes to a darker metal. In addition, the famous Double R badge on the prow, flanks and aft of every #blackbadge motor car invert to become silver on black, leading the way as Rolls-Royce enters the alternative reality of ‘Black Badge’. With #blackbadge, Rolls-Royce has transformed the very icon of its brand to access a darker side of its character.

The power of #blackbadge communicates itself into the ground through new composite aircraft-grade aluminium, carbon fibre, and titanium wheels unique to each Ghost #blackbadge. Developed by Rolls-Royce over four years, the new wheels feature 22 layers of carbon fibre laid in three axes, and folded back on themselves at the outer edges of the wheel rim to provide 44 layers of strength. Further strength is added via the 3D forged, aircraft-grade, aluminium hub which is bonded to the rim using aerospace strength titanium fasteners.

Inside Black Badge’s cabin: Advanced aerospace luxury materials and a sign of limitless possibilities await

Possibilities become limitless inside the #blackbadge cabin as it is suffused with a darker re-interpretation of pure luxury, inspired by Rolls-Royce’s advanced materials and aerospace heritage.

The centrepiece of the #blackbadge cabin is the aerospace-grade aluminium-threaded carbon fibre composite surfacing – material often seen on the surfaces of stealth aircraft. This futuristic material has been reinterpreted at Goodwood to become the world’s most innovative new super-luxury material.

To create this beautiful and innovative material, threads of aircraft grade aluminium just 0.014mm in diameter are painstakingly woven together before being bonded with carbon fibre. This surface material then has six coats a lacquer applied, is left to cure for 72 hours, after which it is hand-polished to a mirror finish.

In addition to the creation of this luxury material, the air vents on the dash and in the rear of #blackbadge motor cars have been darkened through the use of Physical Vapour Deposition. This surfacing method is one of the few ways to colour metal whilst ensuring that the parts will neither discolour nor tarnish over time or through repeated use.

Set into the cars’ facia is a newly created #blackbadge clock whose hands are tipped in orange and whose face is adorned by the ‘Unlimited’ rating infinity logo that previously appeared in the celebrated Phantom Drophead ‘Waterspeed’, created in 2014 to celebrate the daring of world speed record champion Sir Malcolm Campbell. In common with Campbell, the #blackbadge owner’s attitude to apparent limits is to challenge or ignore them, a trait celebrated by the ‘Unlimited’ logo.

The ‘Unlimited’ infinity logo is also embroidered on the Black Badge’s upholstery as black leather combines with vibrant colour of Tailored Purple in Ghost #blackbadge, delivering a more edgy feel to the cabin. The final touch? The moody light cast from the black starlight headliner, and reflected around the cabin from the polished fascia, to create a darkly atmospheric ambiance.

Ghost #blackbadge engineering and technological refinements:

Rolls-Royce engineers used the flexibility of the 6.6 litre V12 engine to make Ghost #blackbadge a little more menacing. Subtle engine output modifications see power increase by 30kw to 450kw and torque by 60Nm (840Nm) compared to the current Ghost, whilst upgrades to the 8-speed automatic transmission give Ghost #blackbadge an added sense of urgency in its delivery of power. Delivering this superior performance, the Ghost #blackbadge ensures rear compartment passengers’ comfort by maintaining Rolls-Royce’s renowned ‘Magic Carpet Ride’.

Intuitive Throttle Response, delivered by computerised smart electronics, carefully hones the response of the transmission. Beyond 25% throttle, the transmission transforms its character, holding gears for longer and shifting between 200rpm and 500rpm later, dependant on gear. Additionally, initiating a downshift requires 20% less heft on the throttle, making Ghost #blackbadge react more quickly to driver inputs. Under braking conditions the transmission downshifts a few rpm sooner, providing the extra security of added engine braking thereby delivering a more spirited drive.

Suspension and steering changes, including the addition of new drive shafts, have ensured that Ghost #blackbadge continues to deliver the most luxurious ride, with just that little bit of extra driver focus.

Always conscious of the safety of its owners and other users of the road, Rolls-Royce has also upgraded the brakes on Ghost #blackbadge, increasing the diameter of the front brake discs by one inch for a swifter and more direct brake pedal response.

Rolls-Royce Dawn

In September 2015, Rolls-Royce unveiled the sexiest, most social and most uncompromised of all super-luxury dropheads ever, and called it Dawn. Like a burst of sunshine, the #rollsroycedawn opens a new age of super-luxury motoring.

The Dawn presented at #auto #china 2016 is finished in sparkling two tone Tuscan Sun and Jubilee Silver. The interior is finished in black and subtle tan leather and Canadel open-pore veneer on the doors, dashboard and rear deck.

The multi-layered roof finished in Silver canvas, French Seam and shape of roof all make for the world’s quietest convertible car. Operating in complete silence in just 22 seconds, and at cruising speeds of up to 50km/h this ‘Silent Ballet’ engages the majority of one’s senses as silence and seclusion are exchanged for the sounds, light and aromas of the outside world. The #rollsroycedawn offers four exquisitely individualised, cosseting seats. The vehicle is a full four-seater, so there is no compromise in comfort wherever one sits. The #rollsroycedawn promises a striking, seductive encounter like no other Rolls-Royce to date.

Wraith ‘Inspired By Music’

Wraith ‘Inspired by Music’, also made its #china debut at #auto #china 2016, completing a trilogy of striking and distinctive Wraith ‘Inspired by …’ specs following the unveiling of Wraith ‘Inspired by Film’ and Wraith ‘Inspired by Fashion’. The inspiration for this unique model is derived from music. A Lyrical Copper exterior paint and contemporary copper theme in the interior cabin create an atmospheric cabin setting. Whether it is the brushed and polished exterior paint, book-matched copper finish features used for the first time on Wraith’s fascia or the clock’s radial lines on the outer bezel playfully emulating the look and feel of vinyl records, the Rolls-Royce team strove for perfection, integrating fastidious detail into every facet of this car.

Meanwhile, the Bespoke Audio system was created from scratch by a team of the world’s very best automotive audio engineers. The two-year development process saw the team work closely with Rolls-Royce interior designers to ensure the system was perfectly tuned to the interior of the cabin. The extraordinary sound clarity and dynamic range are achieved via a 1,300W, 18 channel system which creates ‘the most exclusive music venue’ for the owners to drive in the most encompassing music system in the market.

Audience are welcome to visit Rolls-Royce at booth W406 to witness the stunning and commanding Bespoke automobiles offered by the world leading super-luxury manufacturer.
