The sixth edition grows bigger and brighter, presenting a total of 119 restaurants, including 3 Two MICHELIN Star, 16 One MICHELIN Star, 42 Bib Gourmand, and 58 MICHELIN-Selected food establishments. 3 Special Awards are handed out in recognition of talented individual during the revelation Ceremony: the MICHELIN Young Chef Award, Service Award and newly attributed Sommelier Award.

“If Cantonese cuisine continues to be the unrivaled offering of the city, the MICHELIN Guide Inspectors were delighted to witness that newcomer for delicate Sichuan cuisine has been joining the gourmet battlefield.  And they were not just impressed by the restaurants located in the city center but they also unearthed, by extending their research to other districts and old neighborhoods, many interesting small shops, of which some have been known for years, when newcomers are not short. Passionate restaurants and teams have also been  introducing innovative culinary ideas and techniques, as well as contemporary dining vibes. Together these restaurants depict various facades of the culinary scene in Guangzhou” said Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guide. “ Finally, our team has enthusiascally noted a younger generation has been joining this industry, seeing opportunities in the market, and being comitted to play a role in extending the horizon of gastronomy. So many  talents we want to encourage, especially as they contribute to the vitality of the city culinary scene.”

One restaurant is newly awarded One MICHELIN Star and 18 maintained their Star distinctions

In the latest MICHELIN Guide for Guangzhou, Imperial Treasure Fine Chinese Cuisine, a living embodiment of traditional Cantonese culinary techniques, exquisitely creative Taian Table, and Jiang by Chef Fei, delicately striking a balance between traditional Cantonese and innovative cuisines, have all maintained Two MICHELIN Stars.

In addition to that, 15 restaurants are recognized with One MICHELIN Star for another year thanks to their outstanding gastronomic performance: BingSheng Mansion, BingSheng Private Kitchen (Tianhe East Road), Jade River, Lai Heen, Lei Garden (Yuexiu), Lingnan House, Wisca (Haizhu), Xin Ji, and Yu Yue Heen for authentic Cantonese dishes; Hongtu Hall for Cantonese dim sum, Imperial Treasure Fine Teochew Cuisine and Suyab CourtyardPickmoon Gourmet for Chaozhou dishes, Song for Sichuan flavors, as well as Rêver and Stiller for modern french and european cuisine.

Last but not least, one previously recommended restaurant is promoted to One MICHELIN Star this year: the Sichuanese restaurant Yong. Located in a restored heritage building, Yong offers a dining concept supervised by celebrity chef Lan Guijun that appeals to connoisseurs with its multifaceted Sichuanese menu, quality ingredients, deft execution and thoughtful service. The array of small plates, such as five-colour noodles with lobster, and chilli chicken feet, shows much finesse. Wine pairings are also worth to be ordered from the Sommelier.

6 new restaurants with the Bib Gourmand, and 7 eateries entered the MICHELIN Guide selection

6 restaurants are newly awarded the Bib Gourmand for offering food of good quality and good value – usually at RMB 300 per guest or less, including three courses without drinks.  The 6 additions offer local dishes and homemade flavors: Hui Xing Yuan, Jia Yuan, Rong Yi Fa Niu Za Dian (Shishu Road), Xin Wen Ji (Yuexiu), Yao Ji, and Zijin Shi Fang

In addition to Starred and Bib Gourmand restaurants, the MICHELIN Guide Guangzhou 2023 does also recommend  58 restaurants that offer a dazzling array of flavors and dining experiences, 7 of which are newly recommended by the MICHELIN Guide Inspectors: Cantonese restaurant Chao Ji Claypot Rice (Liwan) and Wing Lee Restaurant, noodle restaurant Sing Wan Loi Noodle, Chaozhou-style restaurant Tao Gie Mie Zhou and Xin Cuo, creative cuisine Chao Yue, and modern continental The Attic.

3 individual Special Awards highlight culinary talents

In addition to uncovering great food, the MICHELIN Guide hands out 3 Special Awards to highlight individuals who have demonstrated outstanding performance. By doing so, the MICHELIN Guide aims to promote the diverse professions of the restaurant industry, while contributing to their attractivity.

Chef Kelvin CHOW from The Attic, a new MICHELIN-Selected restaurant, received this year’s MICHELIN Young Chef Award, supported by Blancpain. He turned himself in the kitchen for European cuisine after his graduation in Computer Engineering. He has gained his culinary skills in some famous restaurant in Hong Kong. Young and passionate, he insists to make his dishes from scratch, while aiming at promoting European cuisine in Guangzhou.

Han YANG from Chao Yue, another new MICHELIN-Selected restaurant, is recognized as Service Award winner. He is passionate and has a good sense of humour during the engagement with guests. Most of the dishes were introduced with an interesting linkage to a childhood memory which allowed a better understanding and devotion of Chaozhou cuisine. The service is attentive and detailed with very responsive reaction.

Finally, the MICHELIN Sommelier Award, presented by Mindongyiyu and distributed for the very first time in Guangzhou, handed out to Jordan LI from Two MICHELIN Stars restaurant Taian Table. He joined the restaurant since its opening. He has been in close communication with owner-chef Stefan Stiller, who would like to introduce German wines to diners in Guangzhou. A very strong focus on German wines is well presented in the wine list. He also communicates with diners from time to time to understand their needs with professional advice.
