Wittman at imm Cologne 2019

This year, imm #cologne reflected what is driving people when it comes to shaping the spaces they live in: individuality is key, flexibility is de rigueur. Pieces complement one another seemingly by chance, colours and materials are boldly matched with impressive harmony.

While the technology undoubtedly has to be smart, the shapes need to be soft and organic. The only 'edginess' that we love comes from the straight lines and familiar shapes of the classics. The fact that we are celebrating 100 years of Bauhaus clearly shows that there is simply no need for some designs to prove their timeless relevance.

Happily, the Wittmann stand anticipated this sense of longing, reaching out to all of its visitors' sensibilities. Everything flowed – soft, organic and in warm colours. The only departure came from Spalt's geometric Constanze 3/4 chair – reminiscent of the great thinkers of the Bauhaus era – whose charming aloofness provided a counterpoint to the luxuriant plush forms that characterise the current collection.

All of the models that populated the coalescent spaces of the Wittmann stand – designed to look like a boutique hotel – were sat in, touched and experienced by our visitors. Sebastian Herkner answers the call from all aspects of our home and working lives with his versatile and endlessly flexible chairs, poufs and tables in a range of heights and sizes. And the Wittmann Hayon Workshop collection delivers new ideas for the home: sofas redolent of islands, swivel chairs that no-one will ever want to get out of.
