Behind the scenes with Francesco Meda & David Quincoces, creators of ONSEN

Francesco Meda and #davidquincoces have partnered with #gandiablasco in the #design of a collection destined to become an icon of everlasting #design. Young talent, innovation and the firm’s extensive baggage promise to bring us a classic from the future.

ONSEN is a proposal for outdoor furniture of peaceful beauty where the most linear and essential is charged with singularity in each gesture. A collection consisting of a sofa, an armchair, a chair, modular sofas and different tables that masterfully combine materials as different as aluminum and leather to integrate them in perfect harmony.

In your first collection for #gandiablasco, ONSEN, we can see that you have given much importance to textiles. Why was that?

The idea was to generate a very marked contrast between the fabric and the metal structure. In the resulting pieces it can be seen very well, since the tubular structure is quite light and its contrast with the cushions and the textile component in general is very clearly seen.

Also, the interlocking leather straps attached to the structure on which the seats and backrests rest provide transparency and achieve a very geometric effect, very clean as a system.

Can you tell us about other distinctive features of the series?

Something important when establishing the collection was the will to create something modular. For #gandiablasco this point is especially interesting, since a system like the one we have designed to adapt to different dimensions and configurations. It is an open system to approach the needs of the end customer.

On the other hand, its construction method is based on a tubular profile that is folded and laser cut. This technology allows, without too much investment, to add even more flexibility to the collection with the option of making non-standard measurements.

Have you been inspired by something in particular?

The original idea was to do something very simple and geometric that would adapt very well in all kinds of outdoor environments. The simplicity and rigor of Japanese culture and architecture have also been a clear inspiration. The collection, which evokes naturalness, calm and simplicity, alludes to these references.

What was the starting point of your creative process?

We like to start by thinking about what material and technology we are going to use. The shape is not predetermined, the entire development of the project begins with that link between material and technology.

What inspires you about the #gandiablasco style?

All its pieces convey a high quality feeling. They are produced in basic materials that, at the same time, are very well finished.

In addition, it solves problems in outdoor spaces in a very functional way and, also, with great attention to aesthetics.

How could you define your style?

We really like to value the materials we use, adding nobility to a material that may seem poorer or more basic. We also try, through the details, to do something functional that, in turn, has a relaxed aesthetic that can be adapted to all kinds of spaces. Nothing shocking in excess.

In the coming weeks, #francescomeda and #davidquincoces will present the final result of their new collection for #gandiablasco, a series of elements with an outstanding graphic and aesthetic component and which are endowed with uniqueness thanks to the game between the lightness and warmth that two predominant materials, aluminum and leather, provide.
