CALLIGRAPHY AND CURATION - Franco Pupulin's Romantic Journey
Maintaining a proud tradition of writing craft brings many pleasures, but few surpass the bonds we enjoy with our global family of Montegrappisti. We consider it a privilege to connect with our community and see the joy they derive from pens and penmanship – especially at times such as these.
Last summer, we had the pleasure of hosting Franco Pupulin at our Ca' Erizzo factory and estate. Italian by birth, Franco lectures in botany at the University of Costa Rica, whilst pursuing hobbies that include drawing, photography, calligraphy and pen collecting. Regular readers may recall his loving review of the Extra Otto Shiny Lines shared early last year.
The events of recent weeks and months may have distorted time, but a special project shared with us by Franco brings last summer vividly to life again, while lending it a presence and preciousness beyond our wildest dreams.
To call "A Romantic Journey to Bassano del Grappa and to Montegrappa" a travel journal would be a cruel understatement. On the evidence of the painstaking care invested into every word, drawing and photograph, it can only be described as a passion project.
As a leading authority on the subject of orchids, Franco's acute eye for beauty and detail radiates from every one of its 38 pages. Created over a period of seven months, he used a Hasselblad analogue camera to capture every stage of his process. To achieve his desired look on black Moleskine paper, Franco used two different gel-markers filled with white pigment ink.
Of course, Franco's sumptuous collection of Montegrappas – and his love of celluloid – did not go unnoticed. Among a stunning selection of Extras, we spotted archive models including Emblema, Espressione and Privilege. Photography from our factory and Atelier shows how elegance is a continuum that begins long before words are committed to paper.
We hope some of you will find words to congratulate Franco on his work. Please look out for posts on our social channels and leave a comment. We also hope you are inspired by his labour of love. With many of us confined to our homes, the urge to create, curate and catalogue ideas is greater than ever. Share your work and messages with our community by posting them on social media with the hashtags #WriteToFight and #MontegrappistiTogether.
