The handing down of The Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai marks an epochal moment in Judaism and Christianity alike. This epic biblical scene provides the centrepiece for a trinity of virtuous designs created in collaboration with our North American partners.
Gustave Doré's Moses Breaking the Tablets of the Law is the leitmotif for The Ten Commandments – a new collection of writing instruments recognising virtuousness and shared beliefs. Two limited-edition renditions – and an open-edition companion – record the French artist's depiction of the revelation at Sinai in striking detail.
Created in two small-batch runs – each comprising 100 fountain pens and 25 rollerballs – The Ten Commandments L.E. uses lost-wax casting to realise Doré's rousing portrayal of Moses in versions of vermeil and sterling silver. On each, a statuesque all-silver cap is matched with a barrel carved from Montegrappite artisanal resin.
Their open-edition brother is, by comparison, smaller in stature, but no less pure in intent. Here, Doré's artwork is recreated using 360º engraving, then individually hand-finished with gold fill. Beneath, each commandment is recited in English and Hebrew along the length of the barrel.
Doré's wood-engraving was one of a series of illustrations created for the 1866 edition of the famous Bible le Tours. Elsewhere in the design, European cultural and religious landmarks loom large: around the figure of Moses are ornamentations observed in Prague's Spanish Synagogue, while each #limitededition bears a clip recalling Michelangelo's effigy of Moses at the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli.
These shining examples of cross-denominational design combine noble ethics with uncompromising Italian craftsmanship. Although made exclusively for sale in North America, interested readers are invited to contact Kenro Industries to enquire about securing their own precious piece.
